VLADIMIR TARASOV presents Thinking of Khlebnikov
Born in Archangelsk (Russia), but of Lithuanian nationality, Vladimir Tarasov is one of the foremost figures in jazz beyond the ‘Iron Curtain’; percussionist extraordinaire, he played for a decade and a half in the superlative GTC / The Ganelin Trio, with which, along with Viatcheslav Ganelin and Vladimir Chekasin, he helped write European free jazz history, while building fundamental bridges between regimes, geographies and politics.
He has released, in under five decades, more than 100 records, between the Trio, orchestras, solo albums, or in collaboration with historical western musicians such as Andrew Cyrille, Anthony Braxton or the Rova Saxophone Quartet, as well as iconic Eastern European peers such as Gyorgy Szabados or the recently deceased Thomas Stanko.
'Thinking of Khlebnikov', his solo percussion piece that he will be presenting in Barreiro, is an imagined dialogue between Tarasov and iconic poet and playwright Velimir Khlebnikov, a pivotal name in the Russian Futurist movement of the early 20th century.
This concert is presented by UNEARTHING THE MUSIC, a project by OUT.RA in collaboration with partners in Latvia, Hungary, Romania and Serbia, co-financed by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, whose main goal is to investigate and provide visibility to experimental music in Europe's non-democratic regimes in the second half of the 20th century, especially those beyond the so-called 'Iron Curtain'.
